Voice of the Child Assessments
Ascertaining and faithfully representing a child's wishes and feelings, so their perspective is genuinely heard and given due weight in decisions about their care and future.
What is a voice of the child assessment?
A voice-of-the-child assessment is an independent assessment that draws out a child's wishes, feelings and views and conveys them authentically to the court. It ensures the child's own perspective informs decisions about their welfare — a right recognised in Article 12 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.
At Gallore, this work is a genuine specialism. Our practice is grounded in Dr Lisa O'Reilly's published research on the voice of the child, and we are experienced in hearing children of all ages and abilities, including pre-verbal and neurodiverse children, through play-based communication.
What's involved
Building trust
We meet the child in a safe, familiar setting and take time to establish rapport before exploring anything sensitive.
Age-appropriate communication
We use play, drawing and developmentally-appropriate methods so children of all ages and abilities can express themselves.
Ascertaining wishes & feelings
We carefully draw out the child's views without leading, pressure or adult influence.
Understanding context
We consider the child's age, maturity and circumstances so their views can be weighted appropriately.
Reporting
We provide a clear report conveying the child's voice authentically, alongside our professional observations.
