Mel Shanley

About

Mel Shanley is a social worker known for his commitment to child advocacy, medical social work and supporting individuals with disabilities. He holds a Master's in Social Work from University College Cork and an honours degree in Social Science from Dublin Business School, and brings over 15 years' service in the social care sector — marked by a pursuit of social justice and a passion for empowering vulnerable populations.

In his work with Tusla, Mel fiercely represented children's best interests in decision-making and the family court — conducting comprehensive assessments, crafting personalised care plans, collaborating with professionals to ensure children's safety, and delivering detailed court reports and expert testimony.

At St Vincent's University Hospital, Mel has worked as a Medical Social Worker across oncology, cardiology and emergency care — advocating for patients and families, coordinating discharge planning and leading crisis response — and as Senior Social Worker for the National Adult Service for Cystic Fibrosis, securing essential supports and leading research on the transition from paediatric to adult CF services, presented internationally. He has on occasion acted as Principal Social Worker at the hospital.

In residential roles with the Muiriosa Foundation and Nua Healthcare, Mel supported children with autism and disabilities, coordinating therapies, education and inclusive environments. As a Bereavement Counsellor at Our Lady's Hospice, Harold's Cross, he provided one-to-one and group counselling for children and families facing trauma and grief.

Mel's career is defined by advocacy for children, individuals with disabilities and those affected by chronic illness. His extensive court experience and skill in crafting impactful court reports make him a trusted, compassionate advocate. He is CORU registered and NAGALRO registered.
