What is an independent social work assessment?
An independent social work assessment is a comprehensive, impartial evaluation carried out by a CORU-registered social worker who is independent of any party to a case — including Tusla, parents and other professionals. It provides the court with an evidence-based understanding of a child's needs, wishes and best interests, together with clear, reasoned recommendations.
Our assessments are grounded in child development and attachment theory, informed by our own research, and delivered with the rigour the courts require and the compassion children and families deserve.
What's involved
Referral & scope

Meeting the child
We meet the child using age-appropriate, often play-based communication, building trust so their wishes and feelings can be genuinely heard.
Gathering information
We meet parents, carers and relevant professionals, and review records and history to build a full, balanced picture of the child's world.
Analysis
We weigh the evidence against the child's welfare and best interests, drawing on established theory, research and professional judgement.

We provide a clear, structured, court-ready report setting out our findings and reasoned recommendations — and give evidence in court where required.
