About us:

The role of a Guardian ad Litem (GAL)

In Ireland, a guardian ad litem (GAL) is appointed by the court to represent the interests of a child in legal proceedings. The role of a GAL is to act as an independent voice for the child, to make sure that their best interests are taken into account in any legal proceedings that affect them.

A GAL is usually appointed in family law cases, such as custody or access disputes, and in child protection cases where the child is at risk. The GAL will meet with the child, speak to other parties involved in the case, and may also speak to other professionals involved in the child's life, such as teachers or healthcare professionals.

The GAL will then provide a report to the court outlining their findings and recommendations on what they believe is in the best interests of the child. The report may also contain the child's wishes and feelings, which the GAL will have ascertained during their meetings with the child.

The role of a GAL is to ensure that the child's voice is heard in court and that their best interests are protected. They play a vital role in ensuring that children are not overlooked or ignored in legal proceedings and that their rights are upheld.
